Md. firm wins deal to bombard Cuba with text messages
Washington Software Inc., headquartered in suburban Germantown, has just won a lucrative U.S. government contract to set up a system capable of sending up to 24,000 text messages to Cuban cellphone users — in what the Castro regime calls a blatant viola- tion of international law.
The base contract between Washington Software and the Broadcasting Board of Gov- ernors is worth $84,000 during the first year, says CubaNews contributor Tracey Eaton, who writes the Cuba Money Project blog.
Four additional one-year options would boost the contract’s total value to $464,160. The system in question makes it almost impossible to block the text messages because the computer sending them makes it look like each individual SMS was sent from a different phone number.
